This article explains why files encoded with the XviD codec are unable to be played on a WD TV Live device.*END

Issue:

Video Codec Id

The playback of certain video content which is encoded with the XviD video codec may result in no video playback, or a message stating that the content is unsupported.

Cause:

This issue occurs when the content was encoded using an XviD encoder and using encoding parameters. In some cases, the file may be detected if file extension is supported; however, when the WD TV device attempts to play the file, it will encounter an error and will not play.
Video files may be encoded to a particular format and codec, such as XviD, by using different tools which utilize encoders. An encoder should follow the specification of the format; however, certain encoders and tools do not strictly follow a format's specification, and may result in content which is incompatible with a WD TV device.

Solution:

Note:
The XviD codec is supported by the WD TV when files are properly encoded. If you wish to continue using XviD content, be sure to encode the content with the following XviD encoder: xvidcore.

Codec Id 86017

The easiest way to resolve this problem is to transcode the content into another supported format (such as H.264/AVC). For a complete list of supported codecs and containers, please see Answer ID 19243: List of Compatible Media File Types for WD TV and WD Elements Play.
