Nickelodeon's surreal SpongeBob SquarePants is one of those rare franchises that successfully command the attention of both kids and adults, and for different reasons. Kids like it for the obvious reasons: colorfully goofy characters, themes and, naturally, lowbrow humor. And adults appreciate its totally out there presentation, not to mention the hidden, but nevertheless sophisticated comedy that bleeds between the lines. It's for all the reasons above and more that SpongeBob has over the years become not only a successful television star, but a movie celebrity, too. As a natural extension, the character and his weird friends have for more than a generation also graced various videogame consoles through a successful partnership with THQ.

Where videogames are concerned, SpongeBob has largely been relegated to the ever-saturated platformer genre. Inspired by other franchises such as Mario and even Tak, another THQ-published series, these SpongeBob games have offered players the chance to explore the hero's warped world, tackle simple challenges, explore and advance. The titles received moderate scores, but for some, particularly younger gamers, the difficulty proved to be more than they bargained for.

It's with this firmly in mind that THQ Australia Studio developed SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants! for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. The title once more captures the unpredictably wacky spirit of the series and simultaneously changes up the gameplay dynamic. Taking inspiration from Nintendo's acclaimed Mario Party games, Lights, Camera, Pants! foregoes the platformer template in favor of a slew of mini-games catered toward multiplayer experiences. Bringing all of these games together is a unique storyline that any SpongeBob fan will enjoy.

Story
Renowned film producer Gill Hammerstein is in Bikini Bottom to film a rare and special episode of The New Adventures of Mermaidman and Barnacleboy. The town is jumping with the excitement and the thrills only worsen after Hammerstein announced that he's on the hunt for new talent. His scouts have set up a series of action-packed 'auditions' in order to see who's got the right stuff for the job. Naturally, everyone from SpongeBob to Patrick and Squidward is ready to become the next big movie star and will do whatever it takes to gain success.

The storyline in Lights, Camera, Pants! is of course a means to connect the title's many mini-games, but it isn't merely tossed in as an afterthought. Well-made and oftentimes humorous real-time cut-scenes are shown before and after major mini-game wins and drive the action forward. More importantly, though, is that players actually direct the presentation of Gill Hammerstein's new movie based on how they play in the so-called auditions.

At the end of each audition, gamers are awarded popularity points. The contestant with the most popularity points at the end of the auditions wins and is able to advance, unlocking more mini-games and sequences in the Mermaidman and Barnacleboy movie. Ultimately, gamers strive to play the role of the coveted super villain and the interesting part is that any of the characters in the game can land the spot depending on player preferences. Gamers who beat all of the mini-games through the story modes are eventually able to create their own Mermaid Man movie, selecting specific Bikini Bottom characters for the differing roles. SpongeBob will play the super villain role differently than Patrick, for example, so choosing the right man for the job can be entertaining in and of itself.

Auditions
There are more than 30 mini-games in Lights, Camera, Pants! Players without any friends can of course square off against computer-controlled opponents, but ideally gamers will want to challenge real, living people. The mini-games in the title are varied and definitely unique. In one, SpongeBob and friends are challenged to flip hamburger patties into the air as quickly as they can, and simultaneously catch patties flipped to them. In another, the gang must inflate their pants and then race through a series of netted hurdles, floating up and then releasing air to sink back down again. In another, the goal is to take the orders of restaurant goers and then first make their food and finally deliver it to them. There's a water polo mini-game, and also more traditional offerings such as a game where the only goal is to knock opponents off of a platform. Some of the games are really well done and a lot of fun while others are relatively shallow in nature and in turn decidedly lacking. For instance, in a mini-game of rock, paper, scissors, players merely choose on of the above and square off in a second-long battle against a single foe. The entire mini-game is over in the blink of an eye.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants! is a dramatic departure from previous franchise games, but based on what we've played and seen so far, it's bound to please fans all the same. SpongeBob supporters who also like the flow of the Mario Party series will undoubtedly find a lot to like here. In addition, THQ may have finally hit upon the winning balance as Lights, Camera, Pants! seems to successfully deliver presentation and playability that both kids and adults can appreciate -- like the show -- for different reasons.
